Die Schülerin Kagome Higurashi lebt im heutigen Japan beim alten Higure-Schrein, ohne zu ahnen, dass sie die Wiedergeburt der Priesterin Kikyo ist und das mächtige Shikon-Juwel in sich trägt. Als sie eines Tages einen uralten Brunnen entdeckt, wird sie durch ihn ins feudale Japan gezogen, das von Dämonen bevölkert ist. Dort trifft sie auf Inuyasha, den Sohn eines mächtigen Dämons und einer menschlichen Mutter, der von einem verzauberten Pfeil an einen Baum gebannt wurde.
